The Counter gives writers, students, editors, and website owners a quick overview of a draft without uploading a file. Use the word total for length targets, the character total for space limits, and the sentence and paragraph totals to spot dense sections.
Reading time is an estimate based on 200 words per minute. Results with a value of zero stay out of the way, so the report only shows measurements that apply to your content.
How to use The Counter
- Type in the editor or paste plain text, formatted content, or HTML source.
- Use the compact toolbar if you want to add headings, paragraphs, emphasis, or lists.
- Review the live totals for words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, headings, ordered lists, unordered lists, and estimated reading time.
- Select Copy report to keep a plain-text summary, or clear the editor to start again.
How structure is counted
For formatted text and HTML, heading tags and list elements are counted directly. In plain text, Markdown-style headings, bullet runs, and numbered runs are recognized. Each list item also counts as a sentence when it does not end with normal sentence punctuation.
HTML analysis uses visible wording and excludes scripts, styles, form controls, code blocks, and hidden elements. Counting tools can differ slightly around abbreviations, unusual punctuation, and hyphenated terms, but this tool applies one consistent set of rules throughout your draft.
